Really pretty writing style, but I thought Amiel was completely exoticized and the romance didn't work. Other relationships in the novel are much more interesting, and I kind of wish the book focused on them and lost the whole "forbidden" romance thing, but then I guess you couldn't have the completely improbable ending and the whole suspenseful setup. So, conversely, I wish that Amiel came across as a real human being.
