I don't think I've ever read a YA novel quite like this one. The narrator is quite old - in his 70s - and has old man problems, like sciatica and a touchy prostate. He is also a writer, who is writing this story about his experience with a young man called Karl who comes to him for help just as he needs a friend himself.
