Grace has felt a strong connection to the yellow-eyed wolf living in the Minnesota woods behind her house since he saved her from his pack when she was a child. Now in high school, Grace worries about her wolf when a classmate of hers is attacked and killed by the pack and the community launches a hunt for them. Injured in the hunt, Grace's wolf is temporarily transformed into his human form, a handsome boy named Sam. As Sam explains to Grace, the werewolves get to be human only a short time each year, during the warm months, and Sam is afraid this is his last time to be a human before he becomes a wolf forever. The two fall in love in a race against time, each day trying to find a way to keep Sam a human just a little bit longer.
This a well-written and satisfying teen love story, the first installment in what I hear will be a trilogy. While the mythology is different and the relationship slightly less intense, this is a good read-alike for the Twilight series.
